HEISEI PERIOD (1989-present)

Background

The Heisei period is basically present day. Well, actually, there’s no “basically” about it. Now, getting a bit more on topic, the Heisei period hasn’t been going all that well. For just about all of it, Japan has been in an economic recession. They haven’t been able to pull themselves out, either, because the Japanese don’t usually spend huge quantities of cash for no reason like certain other countries. *coughcoughamericacough* Sorry, something in my throat. And, because I am not a mystic (no, really?), I cannot tell you what the future holds.

Schools

Modern Japanese schools aren't like those of the Meiji Period. Instead of forcing western culture on the students, they learn about a multitude of other things, including their country and its history. However, schools are still not perfect. History textbooks have the annoying habit of editing out any bad things that Japan had done. Not that our textbooks don't do the same, mind you. Students also have to pass tests to get into high school and college, and studying for those tests take up much of their time. If the Meiji schools were geared towards western culture, modern schools are geared towards tests.
